There are so many cultures that celebrate the lunar new year so I thought it would be more appropriate to call it the Lunar New Year and not Chinese New Year like most call it here in the US.
This year is the Year of the Rat. Rats in the real world are considered be varmint - dirty, undesirable things. But among the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, the rats come first. The animals of the zodiac got their order according their order in a race to cross the river. Surprisingly, it was the rat who won the race by hopping on the Ox's head crossing the river and jumping onto the land first, hence coming before the big guns, the ox and the tiger. Hence, the people born on the year of the rat are considered to be very clever, charming, charismatic, practical and hardworking. Like my favorite rat....
